Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station was one of the UK’s largest coal-fired generating stations, operating for almost five decades before ceasing operations in 2020. As part of the site’s wider redevelopment and decommissioning programme, D360 was commissioned to provide engineering support and Principal Designer services for the removal of a major coal conveyor structure. The project required the safe dismantling of heavily constrained infrastructure in close proximity to critical third-party assets, including National Grid electrical infrastructure and a United Utilities aqueduct.

The works involved the dismantling and removal of multiple conveyor gantries, transfer structures, support stanchions and foundations, while maintaining protection of critical third-party infrastructure throughout delivery.

The principal challenge was delivering the removal works safely within a highly constrained environment shaped by live National Grid infrastructure and a buried United Utilities aqueduct. These constraints did not simply require compliance; they directly governed crane selection, lift planning, exclusion zones and the sequencing of demolition activities.

The successful removal of the coal conveyor structure marked a significant milestone in the wider redevelopment of Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station, enabling safe progression of the decommissioning and regeneration programme.
