Demolition of crude oil refinery, Grangemouth, Scotland
The Petroineos refinery is a historic site originally established in 1924 as the UK’s first purpose-built crude oil refinery. In April 2025, the refinery ceased crude oil processing operations, and PetroIneos is now repurposing the site into a fuel import and distribution terminal.
D360 was appointed as Principal Designer for the project, leading the development of the scope and overseeing the safe demolition of the refinery. This is a challenging project due to the age of the site and the fact that the facility remains a live terminal, actively supporting fuel import and storage. One of the key considerations is SIMOPs (Simultaneous Operations) – demolition works must be carefully coordinated alongside ongoing terminal activities to prevent operational conflicts and ensure the safety of personnel and infrastructure.
